How Does Aromatherapy Work?

Essential oils are absorbed differently to moisturisers, creams or other oils whose molecules are larger.  The unique properties of each essential oil may be inhaled or absorbed through the skin.    During inhalation the individual scent of each oil stimulates the olfactory centres in the nose and travels to the limbic system which is the centre of emotions, memory and sexual arousal.  This is why essential oils have such a powerful effect on our moods and general state of mind.    Essential oils are absorbed and re-absorbed by the skin – the time of absorption may be between 15 to 75 minutes.  These oils are attracted to the oils and fats in the skin and therefore travel down the hair follicles into the inner layer of skin (dermis) where they are absorbed into the bloodstream and quickly pass to the brain and the nervous system.

The essential oils I use during the therapeutic massages are from a well-known, reliable source using the NORA Aromark concept for purity and quality

An example of some of the conditions essential oils are used to help:

  • Nervous system: anxiety, stress or insomnia, headaches, migraines mood swings, depression, mental fatigue

  • Muscular and skeletal problems: arthritis & rheumatism, muscular aches & pains, sciatica etc

  • Respiratory problems, e.g., asthma, catarrh, bronchitis etc

  • Skin problems, e.g., eczema, psoriasis, acne, nail infections, etc

  • Digestive problems: indigestion, constipation, diarrhoea, etc

  • Skin care

  • Women’s problems including menstrual or menopausal problems

  • Endocrine system: hypothyroid, hyperthyroid

  • Cardiac problems: hypertension, hypotension, palpitations
