History
Indian head
massage has been practised in India for many
thousands of years and is derived from the
ancient Ayurvedic healing system and plays an
important part in the daily life of Indian
people. “Champi” is the Hindi word for head
massage which is widely used in the home –
family members share the tradition of massaging
each other – promoting bonding and caring. The
use of different oils dependent on the season
kept women’s hair strong, lustrous and in a
beautiful condition. Barbers would also offer
head massage.
Narendra Mehta,
the modern father of Indian head massage,
studied “champissage” in his native India. He
brought his technique to the UK in the 1980s
having perfected and developed the modern
methods of the therapy. |
