History
The Hopi ear
candles are named after the oldest of the Pueblo people, of
northeast Arizona, who are renowned for their extensive
medicinal knowledge and a high degree of spirituality. Ancient
rock paintings on the Hopi, (Hopi means ‘peaceful people’),
Tower wall in the Grand Canyon show the use of ear candles and
their importance in initiation rituals and healing ceremonies of
the tribe. Their knowledge was introduced to Europe where
increasing numbers of people enjoy and benefit from the pleasant
effects of this age-old therapy.
Although ear
candles have been used in recent times throughout Asia and the
western world there is also evidence of their use in the widely
diverse cultures of Siberia, the Egyptians, Romans, Greeks,
Mayan and Aztec people for centuries.
The ancient
therapeutic art was believed to be developed with the
domestication of the honey bee as beeswax is one of the key
ingredients in making a candle.
